Let your inner light start shining
〰
This space is for high-functioning women who are tired of being strong all the time—or who are in crisis, feeling helpless and out of control.
You may be someone who is capable, responsible, and high-functioning. You hold everything together.
But inside, your body is tense. Your emotions feel distant, overwhelming, or suddenly surface when you're alone. Rest doesn't feel restful. And asking for help feels harder than carrying everything yourself. Even in intimate relationship, you may feel alone.
If this resonates, This is not weakness or failure. You're likely living in survival mode—a mode that once protected you, but no longer lets you fully live.

On the surface, you appear highly capable
You can handle almost everything. That is both your medal and your shackle.
To maintain this version of yourself, you give generously, sacrifice your time and health, and suppress your true feelings and needs. Yet asking for help feels nearly impossible—you don't want to burden anyone.
This version of you feels satisfied when praised by others, but deeply afraid of losing their approval. Your emotions rise and fall with what others think of you.
You seem to have a normal social life, but inside you feel lonely. You don't truly believe anyone genuinely cares or would really help you. Even when there's laughter and cheer, you don't feel truly happy inside.
You may have developed this survival mode because:
You were taught that women should sacrifice and give, learning inherited suppression from your mother or caregivers
You were forced to take on responsibilities far beyond your age—as the eldest daughter or due to family upheaval
You grew up in cultures that discriminate against women and had to become "like men" to earn respect
The survival mode once protected you. The cost, however, is:
✓ Loneliness, exhaustion, and difficulty finding softness or ease
✓ A lack of genuine joy—sometimes even a sense that life itself has no meaning
✓ Anxiety, depression, insomnia, numbness, or emotional shutdown
✓ Patterns of over-giving or emotional distance in relationships
Life is a process of continuous unfolding, revealing, and creation.
〰
We never know what the future will bring. No matter what has happened in the past, and no matter how our past has shaped us into living a restricted life, change can happen at any moment—as long as we are willing.
From survival mode to life mode
Survival mode is not your problem but the intelligence you developed to survive in an adverse environment.
It was adaptive in the past but is not adaptive anymore. The suffering it causes is a signal to be aware of, to be with, and to transform into life mode—which is how life is meant to be.
Therefore, healing is not fixing or optimizing yourself, but acknowledging and transforming by removing the obstacles in the whole system—body, mind, relationship—and allowing the true self to emerge and bloom.
Meet Yoly
I'm Yoly Lin, a clinical counselor based in Great Vancouver, BC - Someone who knows what it is like to be a high functioning woman living in survival mode.
My path as a therapist started from my own healing journey. I have been a high functioning woman who was highly self-reliant and capable - yet found it difficult to experience genuine joy and inner peace. My life and energy are consumed to meet the social requirement to my roles, unaware of who I truly was.
The past 15 years have been a journey of gradual awakening. I have not only walked out of my own struggles and come to understand who I am, where I come from, and where I am going—gaining inner peace and joy—but I have also helped many clients break free from the past trauma and old patterns that once kept them stuck.
My approach combines Western psychology and philosophy with Eastern wisdom in philosophy and medicine. With lived experience in both cultural contexts, I offer a distinct capacity to integrate these perspectives effectively.

“I feel so grateful to have met you. The sessions with you completely changed me.
Now I am able to sooth the wounded child by myself instead of struggling in emotional turmoil. I feel more confident to get along with my boyfriend. I regret that I haven't met you earlier."

You are the architect of your experience.

“Thank you for letting me live in the present without being afraid of what might happen in the future.
"In counselling I realized the impact of what happened inside of me with the relationship with my husband. These experiences allowed me to be aware of my emotional status in that moment and adjust to be my true self instead of overreacting."

The name Coastal Forest Counselling holds personal meaning:
"Forest" is my surname in Chinese, and I was born in a coastal city—like BC, a place where land meets water, where grounding meets flow.
This is exactly what life or health meant to be: The balance between stability and flowing. As high functioning women we have been sacrificing flowing in sake of the need of stability or safety. Let’s work together to restore the balance, allowing life flowing with stable grounding, which is who we truly are and have been forgotten for a long time.
Let your inner light start shining.

The research shows that foundational and sustainable shifts in feelings, behaviors, relationships take a minimum of eight sessions. Yet healing unfolds at its own pace and is different for each person. In my clinical work, the sense of relief, openness, can happen in any session, even in the first session the healing might already start.
-
Everything you say in sessions is held in strict confidentiality. The only exceptions are if there is risk of child abuse, harm to self or others, or a legal request to disclose information.
-
Sessions typically meet weekly to ensure effectiveness, though frequency can adjust to twice per week, biweekly, or monthly depending on your needs. We'll discuss a regular time in our first session.
-
Based on my clinical experience, online sessions have similar outcomes to in-person sessions. It depends on your situation and preference. Some clients choose online to avoid travel time, while others prefer the in-person connection. Both are effective.
